The round disk is a vinyl record. :)
Given that it is electric it probably does not change the sound very much - unless you're playing really loud, really close to the amp. Most unique aspects of the guitar are decorative.

I would have to imagine it changes the density at least some what. Eh either way. It probably sounds pretty cool.
