You can put traps in your property. Not on public area.

IANAL, But I can guarantee that putting traps on your property is generally illegal. I've read about a few court cases related to this, one a person was convicted of murder for putting a small wire on his property across a trail where people ride atvs. It ended up decapitating a person and he was arrested and charged with murder.

Granted, this is mainly state laws we're dealing with. Federally I don't think there is a prohibition against booby traps on your private property.
