The "powers" that were made cannabis illegal around the same time as prohibition of alcohol. When the US got pulled into the european conflict of the late 30's, the government pushed for renewed cannabis hemp production to help with the war effort. Read it back in 2008 or so when I just thought weed was tight. It made me realize that the hemp plant is actually the best thing ever.
