When i was a child , i used to visit the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch , they had a fantastic display set up detailing the entire saga after leaving the icebound ship -- photos of the ship over time being trapped in the ice, photos when the rescuers first reached the survivors on elephant island, everyday items salvaged from the ship used on elephant island, clothing of the survivors/ expedition etc. All the usual stuff but Holy fck they had the actual 'boat' they made for the 800 mile journey to South Georgia - literally the size of double wide couch shaped like a fat canoe - made from 3 inch thick branches, strapped together with twine or ship rope and sail canvas over the frame -- 5 fcking guys in that for several weeks of open freezing ocean -gotta say these dudes were a fcking hearty stout breed back then .... and it all worked out , lolz White men for the win.
