Simple answer:
sudo apt install gnome-font-viewer
It has an "install" button.
Set it to open font files from your file mangler and you'll be overloading your system with ridiculous new fonts in no time.

Yeah, it was the MS font installer I was trying to load. I even added the "--allow-insecure-repositories" and "--allow-unauthenticated" commands after the string. Still no joy.
EDIT: No worries. I appreciate the help. I managed to download and install a few fonts that are good enough replacements for the MS fonts. I also added the "Bookerly" font that my Kindle uses because I like to read with it.
