Gnome as a de is shit, and only weird snowflakes use it. But the bigger issue is that gnome tech is used in a number of side projects. Anything that isn't KDE at this point will use it in some way shape or form. So it's very hard to get away from the project. Even KDE will borrow some applets from the gnome project
