Before they started to sling crap consumer goods to keep up with the likes of BB and Circuit City. Needed some very thin gauge solder, couldn't find any, and had to settle on the standard joe schmo thick gauge shit sold at a big box hardware store.

You can buy a whole book of resistors for cheap, just wire up a combination that works. Surface mount works with that too, so long as you have clearance from the case.

I've had to do that before. Works in a pinch but not the prettiest.
