But what about if you need something same day? It was great being able to walk in, buy the exact resistor needed and then take a small trip back home.

I had access to a few good dumpsters for awhile, collected more than I should have.

You can buy a whole book of resistors for cheap, just wire up a combination that works. Surface mount works with that too, so long as you have clearance from the case.

I've had to do that before. Works in a pinch but not the prettiest.

Man, we had a Heath Kit store nearby back in the 70s and 80s, they were even better for that!

But shiiit, Radio Shack was still a really good alternative for when you needed just that specific rheostat or whatever, and I sure do miss that.
