Lighthearted? Can't say I agree with that. I wouldn't even use the term *lawless*. There has always been a strong sense of conformity to 'the rules", though those rules used to be more about common sense and staying in line with the spirit of the medium, which was generally set by individuals who were higher minded than the reset of us. Break one of the rules and you were at risk of quickly and firmly being ostracized. I'll be frank, that system worked well enough for me. The current internet is one that panders to the LCM and is a waste of time and energy for the most part. It's like trying to have a conversation with retarded children. It definitely used to be far more entertaining though. Now the edgy, fun stuff is rare. People are too scared to say what they really think. Losing my job because I told a joke at the expense of dumb niggers is not worth it.
