This resonated weirdly with me. I've observed how water works my whole life and it just makes too much sense. It's almost like the downpipe we use is a metaphorical attempt to control nature. Then again if leaves fall on your home, the pipe is the better solution.

I worked on a massive custom home in upstate New York years ago and the owner had decorative chains installed in place of many of the downspouts. While they did freeze occasionally during harsh winters, they melted quickly or could be tapped with a hammer to break the ice.

Leaves typically fall through the outflow hole and don't cause much of an issue.
