I really like the 90's sci-fi genera, and these obscure gems are great (They Live).

I really believe that the US culture prior to 9-11 was really on the cusp of something (Matrix, Fight Club, Truman Show, just thoughts off the bat).

They Live takes the cake for something I had never heard of.

60's/70's was awesome too: Planet of the Apes, Logan's Run, Soylent Green, Omega Man

honorable mention in a decade alone: Idiocracy

--no one ever mentions Akira anymore (or anime)

Soldier (Kurt Russle) is a great low budget sci fi I really like.. Also an even lower budget movie, A Boy and His Dog (Don Johnson) is great.
