Seems you have never heard about In-Q-Tel. Or that Google started with the software of the Library of Congress. Or that Facebook is the continuation of the DARPA LifeLog project (it started the same day LiefeLog was "discontinued").
CIA is the continuation of the OSS plus some Mafia plus the hundreds of thousands of ("ex"-) Nazis and their collaborators from all over the world. They couldn't pay them all from their budget, so they started the drugs business. When the drugs and weapons business grew into a trillion dollar business, they had to reinvest the money - the weapons industry and Silicon Valley.

When we were young, we thought that our young heroes did some magic, they were special like pop stars. When I got my own projects, some of the stories became unbelievable: How can it be that a programmer has nothing more than a book with the specifications to write a program that then runs at the first try without the need to test and debug? Impossible. Nobody can do that because a book with specifications cannot tell the whole truth. When I grew old, I learned some details and I had to admit that most of the stars were just fronts. The groups behind them recycle secret military technology.
I think that Facebook got started collecting everyone's data for free and then letter agencies established a bureau inside. I mean, why wouldn't they? Why would they start a company just to see if it sticks when they can infiltrate afterwards?
Of course, there are venture capital firms with known associations with the C_A. I wouldn't be surprised if Facebook, et al have taken money from them at some point.
