What was he charged with? The article doesn't mention it at all other than:

What he did was shitty but not illegal from my understanding?

Edit: Found a little more in some other articles:

They alleged that Vyera hiked the price of Daraprim and illegally created "a web of anticompetitive restrictions" to prevent other companies from creating cheaper generic versions by, among other things, blocking their access to a key ingredient for the medication and data the companies would want in order to evaluate the drug's market potential.

It seems like they got him on technicalities and then imposed the maximum fines and sentence they could.

Having watched the court system in direct action over the last few years and watching a huge amount of legal commentary, you pretty much summarized how the law works.
