not GPS, it's the ONSTAR system

https://www.gadgetreview.com/gm-adds-remote-kill-switch-to-onstar-vehicles

intended as anti theft, but future use includes Wrong Think

Great ammo for the next time I have to hear the Found On Road Dead line from some Chevy loving hick.

OnStar launched Ignition block, a remote kill switch that can disable the vehicle’s ignition by working in concert with the system’s built-in GPS

The GPS is just to give the car's location/speed/direction to police, the shutdown system runs off the mobile network.

A system could in theory pull the location by triangulating the cell tower handoffs, the GPS is just more acurate

I didn't realize my diesel truck from 1990 even had computers, oh wait it doesn't

I have a 95, last year International built the 7.3, zf5 manual, Dana 60.... suck it, my truck will outlive all you

Niceeee. I thought the International IDI was until '94? the turbocharged version? After that it became powerstroke. I also have the ZF5, just redid the clutch and it shifts like a charm. It's a 1990 F250 7.3 IDI btw

It's turbo but still International built and has the mechanical fuel pump.

Just remove the onstar module from the vehicle. It's not hard with the correct wiring diagram. Sometimes it's as simple as just unplugging the module.

You might find that's part of other systems these days, and/or the vehicle will not operate properly without it.

Just pull the fuse. I've yet to see one that didn't have dedicated fuse. An exception being some host the WiFi and cell modem.

Only if you bought a car with all the toys. but most new cars have an alternative system. The radio. they broadcast traffic data to your radio and they could theoretically shut your car down with the radio. Mine has a traffic map that gets it data from FM Radio stations without the radio even being on. I look for them to utilize that for people that don't have an onStar system in their vehicle. I don't pair my phone with my car because....

That system is so old it's amazing it's even still on the air. It's essentially RDS but with other information onboard.

Maybe they are keeping it alive for a reason. it was upgraded in 2015 to 2kbps from 1kbps, graphic capabilities were added and sms support if radio supports sms. It would be pretty easy to embed a computer control feature to shut an engine off if they chose to. they wouldn't need to rely on the onStar system. I can see a nefarious application if they choose to.

Chances are most of these cars have an XM downlink already, this is the more logical choice as satellite radio data can reach places there aren't any FM signals floating around.

saw this and couldn't help but to think about our recent conversation: https://www.kuow.org/stories/we-didn-t-mean-to-ruin-your-mazda-s-stereo

Stopped reading when I got here:

A few weeks ago cellphone companies switched to a 5G signal. But many cars are still only equipped with 3G and glitch when faced with the newer 5G.

That's not how cellular or radio works.

They're going to install cameras into all the cars to constantly monitor you driving like amazon already does to their drivers. If they think you're impaired the car will pull over and call the cops on you.

Not if I don't have a GPS on my car Har har.

My truck is old as fuck, best of luck twat waffles.

Yeah, your basic garmin or smart phone with google maps isn't shutting down your car.

Garmin does have systems with autopilot control for aircraft which could possibly pull off something like OnStar's capability, the common factor is those systems are hardwired into the vehicles.

But NPCs call me a conspiracy nut when I tell them this kind of stuff.
