Maybe we're missing information, but it seems cut-and-dry.
Weird stuff happens in courtrooms. A dear friend of mine was murdered, and a witness told the whole story in court. A punk had stolen my friend's guns, my friend found out and told the kid he wouldn't call the law if the kid returned the guns and mowed his yard all summer.
So for that act of kindness, the kid snuck into my friend's house (along with the witness, who was unaware he was to be involved in murder), and stabbed my friend through the heart as he was asleep in bed.
But some old fucker got on the stand for the defense, and started rambling about the kid and how his grandfather was well-known in the community, and he started doing with his hands. And when he stepped down, he nodded at one of the jurors, who flashed him a quick thumbs up. It ended in mistrial. Picked up the next year, the kid was sentenced to 5 years...but with time served and good behavior, he served about two years.
