Because he stupidly admitted "he thought it wasa hoax but later concluded it was real" and "repeatedly said sorry". That's why. He didn't fight them saying "where the fuck is the evidence this shit even happened", he caved and said he was wrong.
I've updated this because it might make sense. Why else would he do that? There is obviously surveillance video they aren't showing to the public so it kinda adds up if you think about it.
Or he's been controlled opposition for a long time specifically for this trial in an attempt to squelch free speech and this is more theater.
