There is a sect in Russia, and purportedly some parts of Alaska, called the "Old Believers". They separated from mainstream Russian Orthodoxy around [1667](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schism_of_the_Russian_Church), with many sects simply declaring "Fuck it", and moving to remote parts of Siberia, which were owned by nobody, simply so they could practice their religion in peace, without interference from the Orthodox Church, the Russian Aristocracy, or really anyone. And a lot of them were actually pretty successful, for several hundred years. However, in 1951, a Soviet plane accidentally took a wrong turn in Siberia, and ended up [spotting](https://www.loc.gov/collections/meeting-of-frontiers/articles-and-essays/colonization/religious-flight-and-migration-old-believers/) a community of the "Old Believers", reporting their presence back to their commander, who in turn reported it to his commander, as all bureaucrats do, and it went up the chain, until it reached the Soviet Kremln. >The Krasnoiarsk Office of the Ministry of State Security conducted an investigation and tried thirty-three persons. All those indicted were convicted under Article 58-10, Part 2 and Article 58-11 of the Soviet Criminal Code to prison terms ranging from ten to twenty-five years. For the crime of simply minding your own business in Siberia. My point is, the State does not like it when people mind their own business. As a matter of fact, the State only exists for the purpose of minding your business for you. Any attempt to mind your own business is an explicit threat to their authority. And they do not look kindly on that.
