Stress is well known for bringing out the worst in people. Stress is known for influencing bad decisions.

Comfort foods are important. They help us to stay calm, to make good decisions, to navigate uncertainty.

I don't know about your home, but mine is increasingly requesting simple humble home foods/cooking and snacks. It's unlikely that they would want less comfort foods during a SHTF event.

Yet somehow, every time I see a prepping video/supply list comfort foods are sparse/ or missing from the pantry. That's a problem, we need to facilitate mental health in order to thrive. Here's a few things that I keep stockpiled to support humble home comfort foods,

Sweet: Drink mixes/hot chocolate, real maple syrup, instant pudding, cake/brownie mix, chocolate, sugar dense candies, pie filling, condensed milk, bitters,coffee syrups, baking extracts, extra cinnamon/nutmeg/sugar.

Non Sweet: Sushi rice/wraps/vinegar, ranch packets, pastina and orzo pasta, better than bouillon, large granule finishing salt, dried basil (+ garden seeds), coconut milk, roasted jarred peppers, commercial mac'n cheese, bisquick, shortening, tobasco sauce/sriracha, popcorn kernels, jarred salsa, stone ground mustard, tomato paste, baked beans.

I look forward to hearing your comfort food stockpileable items. Lets support mental health and well being even though our leaders and politicians don't seem to care.

I'm surprised you weren't stocking up on real maple syrup before. It and honey are very useful, and easy to get, natural sweeteners, and aside from the sugar, are quite healthy. Also, learn to make your own candies from this honey and syrup.

I highly recommend that you learn how to make your own syrup, and if you have the land for it, start some beehives.

Also, learn how to make your own pasta, skip all of the baked good mixes and make those from scratch, and just stock up on flour and other ingredients. A 50 lb bag of flour is literally $20.

Also look into bulk dried beans instead of the baked beans. Again, learn to make your own.

tl;dr Stop stocking up on finished products, stock up on the ingredients themselves, and learn how to make the finished products. The ingredients are far more versatile, and far cheaper

I have staples stocked. There's just something special about your favorite brand of baked bean. exc.

If you enjoy making your own candies, you should try candied orange peels. It's very good, and makes use of something that is often wasted.
