Just a couple of things to add. Condensed milk. One can condense milk to one can water, personally I add a few extra tablespoons to thin it out. Now you have milk. Vegetables. Even though I don't have the land to plant, every year throughout the summer I collect seeds from the vegetables I eat. Let them out to dry, bag them, label them and store them for the winter. Why? I hand them out the family in the springtime to plant for me. But if the shit hit the fan, they'd be there, ready to plant. Base. People never give love to things like chicken or beef base. It's just dehydrated fat and salt, with a smattering of spices and herbs for flavor. Hungry? Nothing to eat? Boil your water clean, add base and sip. If you don't know what you need for prepping I suggested one week long camping trip. Take notes on what you wanted that you did not bring.
Mine is 18 year old whisky, luksusowa Vodka, olives, spinich, brussel sprouts, tomatoes, mushrooms, tuna, coconut milk, spices, maggi sweet chili sauce, eggs, flour, granola, kielbasa (the real polish kind), Pączki, mehmet efendi (coffee), mustard, slap your mama (spice), etc. These are the basics.
For the american Diet I would think Tomato and pasta / flour. For some spicey shit is key. For myself it would be soup bouillon / stock / base because I love soup and that will make any ingredient tastier.
Honestly the main issue with preppers is they have a rock solid 6mo plan but no 2+ yr plan in sight.
Fph got massively asshurt over this post
In an effort to appease the FPH lurkers, I would like to point out that I managed to convince my family that lentil stew is comfort food. Recipe as follows; 1 cup of dried lentils, 2-3 carrots (diced), 2-3 stalks of celery (diced), onion or shallots, plus whatever vegetables are dying in the fridge, add small can of tomato puree if available or cooking for more than three people. Boil in 4-6 cups of water until lentils are cooked. allow to cool and blend. add bullion and salt to taste (add salt at the end because it makes lentil skins tougher).
if you have stale bread or bread ends, you can make croutons to put in the stew. it's very tasty, healthy and cheap.
Onions are disgusting
I'd rather drink a shot of my own urine than eat one
have you tried shallots? They have a mild/sweet flavor and often work better in recipes than onion.
I'm surprised you weren't stocking up on real maple syrup before. It and honey are very useful, and easy to get, natural sweeteners, and aside from the sugar, are quite healthy. Also, learn to make your own candies from this honey and syrup.
I highly recommend that you learn how to make your own syrup, and if you have the land for it, start some beehives.
Also, learn how to make your own pasta, skip all of the baked good mixes and make those from scratch, and just stock up on flour and other ingredients. A 50 lb bag of flour is literally $20.
Also look into bulk dried beans instead of the baked beans. Again, learn to make your own.
tl;dr Stop stocking up on finished products, stock up on the ingredients themselves, and learn how to make the finished products. The ingredients are far more versatile, and far cheaper
I have staples stocked. There's just something special about your favorite brand of baked bean. exc.
If you enjoy making your own candies, you should try candied orange peels. It's very good, and makes use of something that is often wasted.
I have a freezer full of blueberry muffin mix
