I use stock Android and use the standard SMS app.

Interesting. It looks like they have already implemented "RCS Universal Profile 1.0" internally: https://www.gsma.com/futurenetworks/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/RCC.71_v1.0.pdf

While it claims to be encrypted using TLS, it also implements a "store and forward" schema, which means the messages are unencrypted while on their data servers, and they could absolutely interfere with what you are doing.
