Guess that's what happens when you have a lot of regrets.

Many years on I still have an old college nightmare come round now and then. There's variations but it's basically finals week and I suddenly remember there's a class I'd signed up for but somehow forgotten to go to all quarter/semester.

I STILL occasionally have nightmares about not remembering my locker combination, or it not working, then being late for class.

I used to work a job that had an alarm system for when something went wrong. Every now and then I'll be out somewhere and a fryer or some kitchen appliance will have the same kind of beep and my gut reaction is to jump up and run to the problem.

Shit like that just sticks in your brain and it's near impossible to get out.

on-call 24/7 for YEARS with a pager. If I hear something that sounds like that old-school fucking pager I get a instant rage reaction. It is burned into my mind forever. I have not carried a pager is more than 10 years at this point.

High school was horrible. It felt like prison for a crime I never committed, and occasional nightmares might be a sign of trauma.

At random times, and frequently, throughout the day, ask yourself "where am I and how did I get here? Am I dreaming right now?". Once it becomes a habit and you start thinking these thoughts automatically, it should spill over to your dreams as well. When you are in a dream and ask yourself "how did I get here" and "am I dreaming" you tend to realize that you are dreaming and can take control of the dream. No more nightmares.

I've heard that before and tried to use it with 0 effect.

It won't happen in a couple of days, unless you are REALLY good about picking up new habits. You basically need to be thinking about it constantly until the thoughts just happen on their own, almost like an obsession.

It's been well over fifty years for me and the nightmares are down to maybe two or three a year now. At least they're not as intense as they once were. Unfortunately, the nightmare inducing experiences were occuring both at school and at home. Pet therapy has been a big help.

Lol how big is your 'regret' count?

It's a common thing, and will likely stay with you forever. Mine involves wandering ever changing hallways trying to find the classroom where I need to be to take the last final exam I need to graduate. The friends I bump into along the way don't understand and only offer up distractions. Been over 40 years for me, and still no relief.

My high school burned down years ago and was replaced, so there's no way I'll ever find that classroom now.

Mine had a lot of stuff crammed into it, but started with me trying to find my mechanical pencil I used through high school. Not the same pencil. but the same brand. They don't even make it anymore.

It's amazing the random details they contain.
