The companies doing the interviewing will never say a candidate was rejected due to race or sex. Instead they will say something like, "we have received other applicants that are more closely aligned with our current needs" or "we do not have a reason why you weren't selected".

Yep. I do HR work as part of my job.
I only worry that since it says the next step involves paid projects, he will have to tip his hand as to true identity. After the first paid interview project, they will cut him loose with the canned BS reason.
