What is hilarious to me is not only all the money Amazon will lose, but how easy much of this could have been avoided. It could have been Lord of the Crowns or King of the Crowns, set 5000 years after the LOTR series - and while there still would have been many complaints, at least they wouldn't have been accused of ruining JRR Tolkein's work and reputation.
Of course if they followed that path, then the Amazon product would have had to stand on its own merit, which would have removed the ability to destroy beloved past works...
Or they could’ve just made a good show and said fuck off to the woke crowd…and made money.
But seriously…thinking through it just now, what’s the end goal? They literally spend a billion on it for what? How many subscriptions do they think they’ll sell - even with the most optimistic targets there’s no way they come out ahead.
So they lose money regardless of the outcome. Fans are going to be pissed off regardless of the outcome; there’s no way they can create something to satisfy the masses in this day and age. 35% of the people will be pissed off by whatever choices are made.
The estate comes out richer, but knowing they’ve completely sold out their forefathers creation. What a shit position to be in for them.
Literally nobody wins here…except the only people who ever benefit from the degradation of our society, our greatest works. There is really no benefit to anyone in the world by this choice. It is one more mainstay, one more piece of our culture that is ruined……….
They could have dropped 1B on an IP to make a whoke inclusive show to rival LoTR, received no complaints, but instead they went for derivative garbage. This is just as bad as the exploitation version of white capeshit that happened in the 70s and 80s.
Baldo Besos was the recipient of what could be the most expensive shakedown ever, when his golddigger took him to divorce-rape court. Even so, it's doubtful he even noticed the few billions missing. Same with this fiasco. Thanks to the legion of loyal Amazon customers, this billion will soon be replaced. Besos and Gates are the posterboys for why I advocate for a wealth cap of 500 million dollars....at best billionaires serve no useful or needed function in society....at worst they use that excess wealth to screw over everyone else.
I actually did a calculation once, and found that for all reasonable purchases while living a life of absolute luxury you'd be hard pressed to spend more than 50 million in your lifetime. The includes living in an estate and even owning castle, first class flights everywhere, staying in the most expensive suites, purchasing more than a couple exotic cars, etc. Of course, you can't buy entire cities, but for just living a life of opulence, 50 million (at least for me) was more than enough.
