I am pretty skeptical about climate change in general. However I think the idea of sea levels rising if the temperature in the arctic raises is pretty sound. If you have ice floating in water, a significant portion floats above the water. When the ice melts all that water goes back down and you will see the liquid level rising. You can observe this with a simple glass of ice water.
Note: this is wrong. See ninja tacos post below
Oh wow look at it appears you've never questioned this assumption of yours.
I stand corrected. Well done.
Up voted for handling criticism well.
Melting ice on land does increase water level. Greenland and Antarctica are land.
Sure, but that's not what the claim I was responding to was making.
All of this is moot though. All signs show us moving into a solar minimum ice age
Water level doesn't go up if floating ice melts. It remains exactly the same. If all of the ice in the Arctic melts the ocean level won't change.
Global warming is caused because polar bears started smoking crack
The water ice below sea level is expanded and upon melting that volume remains constant due to the ratio of displacement replaced by water ice above sea level.
Do a test. Fill a glass with water. Add ice cubes right to the top.
Let it melt.
No water will spill over the cups edge.
Muh sea level rise doesn't pass maths or observation
The notion that climate change specifically global warming will be bad thing is dumb. We dont know where the new wet areas will be, but they will happen, we do know that the majority of land in the north hemisphere is empty, and not used because its too cold. If it gets warmer, huge swaths of canada, and russia, will become the new great plains, and the eastern US may turn into a new Amazon. Sure shitholes on the coast will have to be moved a little inland, but the long term gains for humanity could be huge.

It's one of the most precisely predictable things in nature. All you need is a contour map to be able to see where n additional inches of water will inundate.

That depends on a lot. If the climate of large flat areas with good soil becomes too arid for reliable agriculture people will starve no matter how much extra land opens up in Canada or Russia. Even if that doesn't happen, the distribution of rainfall and freshwater would certainly be affected. That is also a life or death situation.
I disagree because it doesnt happen over night. The front line currently is Las Vegas and parts of California. Theyre pretty much on the path to being fucked anyway.
2 things, 1) most of the sea ice {north pole} is under water. Ice floats poorly. Only the top 1+5 percent is above water. 2) ice expands. When it melts it shrinks
You can test both of these facts at home with your freezer.
