I lived and worked in a 3rd world country for a couple of years. Used to see locals walking along the road to 'town' carrying their shoes. Then putting them on when they got close to the town center, even if they were just the cheapest rubber flip flops.. Then taking them off when they left town and walking back home barefoot, again.

Interesting. Were they too expensive to risk wearing out?

That, and a 'show of wealth'. Similar to gold chains and rims here in the 1st world.

I'm thinking they're more comfortable barefoot.
