Lost my point somewhere in the previous comment. What I wanted to get across was that he had made it by this point after a very long, hard life and was likely willing to say most anything the jews wanted. Does this excuse his lack of integrity? That's a matter of debate. You work the line as long and as hard as he did and then get offered a golden opportunity.
