How much land do you think it takes to house, feed, clothe, and otherwise provide for the needs of one civilized human being?

Well, the ENTIRE land surface of the world (including the antarctic, the mountains, deserts, jungle, etc) is 36.8 billion acres. The human population of the world is 7.84 billion people.

That is just 4.7 acres per person.

The world is nowhere near overpopulated. There are plenty of options using technology. For subsistence living for everyone?, yes.

There was some old sci-fi book in which some 20 billion people lived in "floating skyscrapers" raised off the ground so every inch of soil could be used for food production. Even if possible that's some shit living conditions.

Under water, on top of water, under ground, in the sky, even the land has plenty of room. All the same places can grow food. Yes not my ideal living situation.

I'd say either go forward (into space) or go backward (a good plague for housekeeping). Completely over running the planet like a virus is terrible, and probably what we'll do in the end...
