" the Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined Dartmouth for failing to adequately train staff on the limits of disposable gloves". How could they have trained staff to a hazard that was not tested or documented? The testing of the permeability of mercury through latex was done after her exposure. This is a great example of the government punishing an innocent bystander in order to protect its authority. She knew more about the hazards posed by the chemicals she worked with than OSHA bureaucrats. It was a terrible accident and she didn't blame Dartmouth.

The dangers of non-elemental mercury are well known among chemists. When working with a new compound SDS sheets are only one source of safety info.
