I developed a new method for creating a good quantity of ice this summer.

Take a large stainless steel mixing bowl, fill it up with water and put it in the freezer.

When it freezes:

  • Use a sharp knife + small mallet to chisel the ice into chanks of whatever size you want.

  • Put the chunks of ice into bags / plastic containers in the freezer.

The round stainless steel bowls are great for ice making because as the ice freezes it expands and the round shape of the bowl directs the ice upward so nothing breaks.

It was really nice have a VERY LARGE supply of ice last summer. It's also really nice have very large chunks of ice in your drink instead of those stupid tiny cubes.

A knife? Get an ice pick and an ice bucket. This was actually the common way of ice up until the late 60s.

Virtually everything contains bacteria and mold, locked in an eternal war dating back to before there were multicellular organisms.

They're even fighting right now on top of you. In your mouth. In your asshole. Things are good for us when neither side has the upper hand.

Wrong. As usual.

Ice packaged without this logo means they didn't pay for the label. Although it may be possible that it has bacteria or mold, it is more likely to not have it because most companies selling a product that people consume actively try not to make their consumers sick or dead.

Also, having a label guarantees nothing. Especially when these types of orgs have an allowable amount that still passed inspection.

Freezing kills mold and bacteria....

No, it doesn't. They just spore and wait for things to warm up.

On the other hand, this logo is just branding. I guarantee there are still moldy ice machines carrying the logo, and I also guarantee you that the on-demand ice kiosk around the corner from me has less mold and bacteria than most packaged ice.
