Mor likey, Florida Keys are from the word CAY, a sandy low lying island sitting on a coral reef. Also pronounced 'Key'.

Key, Caye, Cay, Quay, and I don't know how many more variant spellings are all pronounced the same and mean the same thing.

See mom, I did learn something from Grand Theft Auto. GTA 3 in this case.

It comes from the french word: quai. Which comes from the Roman gaul : caio. It means a wharf. In french it's ppronounced like the first syllable of '' (ke)ttle '' . We never pronounce the s for plural. One famous quai in Paris along the Seine is called ''quai des Orfèvres''. It's the old criminal police headquarter for the greater Paris.

So that's how the word is spelled.

It's worded like that as it helps you to remember for when you're in Salford Quays, Manchester - that you may as well leave your keys in the car as it's getting nicked regardless.
