It comes from the french word: quai. Which comes from the Roman gaul : caio. It means a wharf. In french it's ppronounced like the first syllable of '' (ke)ttle '' . We never pronounce the s for plural. One famous quai in Paris along the Seine is called ''quai des Orfèvres''. It's the old criminal police headquarter for the greater Paris.
