Buy a used pre-smart one on Craigslist; it'll last longer.

I'm sure future smart (snitch) power meters will be able to detect when you have such devices running (by their power signature), and fine you automatically.
Just add a ‘smartifier’ between the plug and outlet.
That’s a dark thought.
We bought our top loader in 1999. All I've had to do is replace the drain pump and motor coupler. It still washes the clothes just fine.
