>Sarah J. Maas, Freida McFadden and Emily Henry –– can these popular authors join forces and save the day against a dangerous decline in reading for enjoyment? Daily reading for pleasure has plummeted 40% over the past 20 years, according to a new study published Wednesday in the journal iScience. The report, which surveyed people in the United States about their reading habits between 2003 and 2023, showed that the decline has been sustained over time –– about 3% a year.

For the stats, think about how many non-English speakers are around, now. Of course they aren't reading. Younger people are addicted to TikTok and watch "BookTok" crap and count that as reading. It's insane.

I still read a ton. According to my kindle I read 100-150 books a year. I will say, I am technically finishing less because I use Kindle Unlimited to save money and so many of the books are such crap. They are either AI generated or so woke that after the first chapter or two I've been lectured on how men are stupid or the author uses they/them for a single person. I will not put up with that confusion when reading for pleasure.

I listen to a whole lot less audio books, though. Duel narration distracts me. Authors are demanding radio plays and it just doesn't work for me when I listen while doing other stuff. Plus, again, the books are so often AI generated crap that it is painful to listen to.
