I hiked for years in boots. Made the conversion to Trail runners 3 years ago and love the difference! No more wet boots all weekend long, or taking off for river crossing. La Sportiva ultra raptors and darn tough socks dry within a hour. Soaking wet gore tex boots SUCK!
heavier pack = sturdier boots
I don't think I'll convert from boots, going where I go (terrain).
I have worn trail runners for trail running (hash running if you've heard of it), no pack on back
It doesnt rain where I go, like I don't even bother with rain gear or covers
But yeah I can see the attraction to different footwear in other regions
Try a pair! We have Brutal Mountain terrain and I love this transition.
My mentality was... Identical, being former Military i always wore boots tightly laced around ankles. This was my best change in gear by far
