I've thought about renting to others. I like having the extra space especially if I do start a business at some point. I've never had my own business and want to start one at some point. Something in the realm of a Christian / Catholic business, but I'd be a Christian / Catholic more or so myself as a businessman.
Starting a business is an extremely rewarding, and challenging thing to do - it's also one of the only ways that you can truly become wealthy.
That said. I'd strongly advise against mixing business with many other things. Businesses just don't work that way because there is money involved. There is a reason you don't hire friends, or do work for free.
My partner learned that the hard way, with her second business partner, and first employee. As a boss or business owner, your first responsibility is the survival of your business. As much as your business partners/customers like it when you're best buddies, they like you a lot more when they have a stable paycheck, or trading partner. There will be plenty of opportunity for charity later down the line.
What business plans or ideas do you have?
I'd only do work for free if I was building a portfolio or something like that. I wanted to be a Web Designer at one point when I was much younger. I'd do work for free starting out to build up a portfolio (if I was in college or something like that alone), but after a year or so I'd only do it at cost if I was going to give someone a deal or somewhat above cost to be safe. Free for Christian / Catholic (donating time on the side) type websites though or something like that only.
Selling products it would have to be at cost at the cheapest if not slightly above that unless I was donating to a local Christian / Catholic church or something like that. I also wouldn't want to hire any friends and I've even heard hiring a wife can ruin a business completely if not just the marriage completely.
I'd be selling products myself online and such.
