TLDR; He won't tip if he orders standing up (fast casual, fast food, etc). To a degree it makes sense. I typically only tip somewhere like that if its a holiday and they are super busy since working days like that kind of suck.

I tip above average for 'service' and the service industry has No Idea what service is.

Truly good service is worth tipping and extra in some cases. I agree and do so as well.

Most of the time.. Its just "meh".
