TLDR; He won't tip if he orders standing up (fast casual, fast food, etc). To a degree it makes sense. I typically only tip somewhere like that if its a holiday and they are super busy since working days like that kind of suck.

His "new rule" is just the way most people have treated tipping for a long time. I've never tipped at a fast food restaurant. I only tip at a fast casual restaurant if someone takes my order after I am seated. I won't tip if my only table service is the food delivery (no drink services at the table). I think most people have done it this way if they are in their 30s or older. I see nothing shocking here other than the idea that customers should tip for all types of restaurant services. I won't be subsidizing some fast food restauranteur's payroll when their employee did nothing more than the bare minimum of service.

Yeah, I agree with that mentality. If the only "service" is the food delivery and nothing else.. Well, if the workers don't make enough then the restaurant should charge a small amount more and pay the workers better.

Well, if the workers don't make enough then the restaurant should charge a small amount more and pay the workers better.

The lower wage option for restaurant servers does not override the minimum wage. If a server making $2.50/hr doesn't bring in enough tips to meet minimum wage rates, the restaurant owner must still pay them minimum wage rates. They are required to comply with the minimum wage laws, but servers who don't make enough in tips will often get fired since the restauranteur doesn't want to pay them the difference to make it to the minimum. This proves that if they could pay you less, all the way to $0.00, they absolutely would. I have no sympathy for restauranteurs who fail and close up shop if they ever expected their customers to subsidize their low-wage labor.

I 100% agree. I have bussed/waited tables before and if a restaurant can't stay open because they have to pay minimum wage then it shouldn't be open in the first place.

[–] 2 pts

I agree. I thought this was the norm. Those tip jars have annoyed me since the day they popped up on the counters.

Good rule.

If you do not tip a tipped employee then the worst case for the employee is they earn a full minimum wage, and the restaurant has to pay a full minimum wage with no tip credit.

Restaurants are pushing the "customary" part to the limit. I went one place where we had to order by kiosk with no employee to greet us and answer questions. The last part of the order dialog was the tip amount for the order. By pushing customary they will expand the types of tipped employee allowing them to pay less than minimum wage and take the tip credit.

I was a waiter, I support the tip system, but not in the direction it is going. If you order standing up, no tip.

These lazy pieces of shit all bitch and moan about wanting tips for doing fuck all. Then there's guys like me that work at an auto parts store putting batteries in cars and fixing other stupid shit (that would commonly be charged an hour of labor in any shop) and i'm lucky if I even get a goddamn thank you, let alone a tip.

[–] 2 pts

I do my auto work but if I had someone replace my battery for me at a auto parts store I would absolutely give them a tip. I could be out of town or not have tools or something and be in a rush. Not having to buy/borrow tools and having someone do it for me in 5 minutes is worth a little extra in my mind.

I'm very annoyed at "tipflation". I don't tip for counter service. I've been asked to tip at completely automated stores, which I refuse to do. I've even been asked to tip a computer algorithm (at super.com) because it saved me money on a hotel. Can you fucking believe that?

[–] 4 pts

That is fucking nuts. Its like going through the self checkout and being asked to tip the machine. Bitch, I did the job, you tip ME.

[–] 2 pts

Now that you mention it, I hate going through self checkout lanes at grocery stores. The audio prompts are annoying and I'm being asked to be an unpaid cashier.

I feel like the only way this tipping shit stops is if (at places where you pay before you get your product) when they turn the screen around, ask for a manager. When they come, tell them that you are canceling your order because it is unreasonable to ask for a tip at this kind of place, then walk out. If enough people do that, and their bottom line is hurt, shit will change very fast.

As usual this is all jewery.

One upon a time you could work in a service industry and, while probably not be rolling, get by.

But endures borrowing for jew stuff has led to endless printing and inflation. Must pay for wars and importing 4th worlders.

Now we need a higher basic wage. But small businesses are getting by on margins also hiring from the usury scam. So they try to pass the wage off as a tip.

Most people are decent and get is not the workers fault they're paid shit so try to give a little more. But that only encourages the mega jew controlled businesses to push it further.

Certainly some businesses are just greedy and won't do right by employees. And some can't get by themselves on their on margins after usury.

Either way the only answer is do whatever you can at home. Make your own food, be your own coffee, you'll be healthier, wealthier if you're wise.

I don't go back if I'm pressure to tip anywhere other than a nice sit down resturant (and even then it's stupid. The rest of the world manages to have resturants without that). Unfortunately that probably means I leave some small businesses who mean week but have their own backs against the wall. But the line must be drawn.

I tip above average for 'service' and the service industry has No Idea what service is.

[–] 1 pt

Truly good service is worth tipping and extra in some cases. I agree and do so as well.

Most of the time.. Its just "meh".

I’m going to start reducing my tips for the bartender, opening a can of beer doesn’t even deserve $1. Pouring a pint yes, a can hell no.
