Why did they keep the sailors on the mast?

They are there to let the sails down once they get out of harbor.

I see, but once they had lost power and the bridge was a threat they should have been brought down. All seems so ridiculous.

It all happened really fast, plus there are a lot of them up there. I would not be surprised if some did start making their way down when they saw what was happening, but not enough time for everyone to get down.

The Brooklyn Bridge will be closed until a bridge inspection is completed on the structure.

Good information in that thread. It does seem like these tugs should have a line to the ship. You can see from one I posted earlier the tug was trying to get to the stern but it was too late.

A lot of good points brought up. Must have been scary to be a topman and watch this unfold.
