That's because most of our food used to be meat based. Foraging for nuts, berries, fruits, and mushrooms was supplemental, a treat in a way as well as a form of desperation. Also, it was pretty fucking dangerous. They didn't have little booklets that told them what was safe to eat, think of all the poison berries and shrooms out there...our ancestors had to find out the hard way and pass down the knowledge orally.
When they say we were hunter-gatherers, it was more like 95% hunter, and at the most 5% gatherer. I give my cat Dactylis glomerata aka cat-grass as a supplement, but nobody pretends that cats can survive off of the shit. Why humans are pretending they can purely survive off of non-meats I will never understand. Our bodies simply were not built that way, though we live in a time when people are cutting their dicks and tits off to try and be something else so I'm not surprised.
That's pretty good especially for a modern diet. People over eat on carbs and undereat protein all the time. We never ate that much carbs back in the day pre-agriculture. The question is what sources of protein do you eat? meat, seafood, nuts?
