I have hiked in Colorado many, many times. Even in country with signs designating it a mountain lion risk, I have NEVER seen one come out in a open field in daylight like this. Part of the reason the cat keeps advancing is the man keeps moving away. It seems counterintuitive and takes balls of steel, but you're supposed to HOLD YOUR GROUND and NOT RETREAT. Then make noise and act as big as you can, raising your hands, grabbing sticks, etc. Having a gun would also help. I lived in mountain community where the game warden told us if we saw a certain mountain lion, SHOOT TO KILL because it started leaving deer and dog carcasses, not because it was hungry, but just because it enjoyed hunting. That was a rare occurrence.
