But you need heavy mining operations for the batteries, and most likely you'll charge them with a power supply fed by a coal plant. So as of right now i just don't see it. I think electric cars are a cool idea if it saves money but regardless nothing ever beats the sound of a nice v8. Its too bad the next generation will likely have to rely on the dealer for repairs entirely because cars are becoming a fucking computer.

How's that different than massive drilling, pipelines, and shipping operations for oil?

Depends on where you live. California is <3% coal. Idaho is 20% coal. Nevada is 14% coal. Arizona is 12% coal. Viginia is 7% coal. Maine is <1% coal.

Its not and thats the point. Electric batteries are just as bad as using gas.

And i bet most power production is either nuclear or some kind of petro but im too lazy to look into it.
