Honestly, there is very little regulation, so you COULD become one just by advertising that you are one. Realistically, you go to a training class, get certified, and then get accredited through a guild that makes you keep up continuing education credits. Either way, you really only get good by seeing A LOT of clients.

But you don't have to get licensed through the state? You can take the course, get the cert, and just start advertising?

In most places it's completely unregulated. In those places you wouldn't even have to take a course. You could just read a book maybe.
