I think he has done this to help stabilize the situation for Christians in Muslim majority states that are former Soviet republics. It's hard to understate how insensitive to their situation most Westerners are. I may not like that he has done this, but I can see how it affects those in areas not under direct control of Russia. See especially Uzbekistan.

That is a good point. Russia is huge and we never hear where they were built. Russia and China both have territories which includes many people and cultures.
I remain undecided about Putin. But the mosques definately sway me.
