Careful with creosote, I read a while back it can be high cancerous especially if it comes in contact with skin.

I guess regular tar would work too.

You got a good point there. OK, pressure-treated 4x4's? Nope, treatment has arsenic in it. OK, Round telephone poles? Nope, creosote and other preservatives.
