Tragic

Anytime something like that happens, I can't help feel a pang in my chest. I felt the same thing watching ISIS destroy priceless relics. It a great loss for humanity to spend centuries preserving these things, only to have them senselessly destroyed.

Let us hope this was not a malicious intent for insurance purposes.

Even it was just some freak lighting, had they simply invested in some preventative measures, the loss would not be so great. It really says something about the current state of Brazil that they can't be bothered to protect their own cultural heritage. What they did was negligent.

'We recently finalized an agreement with (state-run development bank) BNDES for a massive investment, so that we could finally restore the palace and, ironically, we had planned on a new fire prevention system.'

I wouldn't be surprised if the loan is inflated to demolish the structure and build something entirely new to help sweep away more evidence of the imperial past.

In conjunction with the largest heist in history. Imagine what any of that would now go for to some black market collector? It's either a great tragedy or a great con.
