Nice tubes, and you know the military tubes were extremely high quality stuff.

Yes. The 1629s were made specifically for the military during WWII, a sort-of 6E5 workalike.

They showed up in consumer gear afterwards due to the sheer numbers of them that were made. Even in the mid 1990s it was possible to find these things for $5 or less.
