I see it as Google's way of slowly deprecating the universal standards of the internet, the URL being one of those. I would guess the end goal is making it friendlier for their technology while making it harder for yours.

Nailed it. They want tech supremacy. Google is essentially the tech division of the U.S. government now.

Helps them hide the shady crap they do. For example, the kind of informatoin that is often present in full URL strings when they redirect you 20 times through various tracking domains.
