People not working didn't make car rental companies sell their fleets. It was panic. They were afraid of "we're all gonna die" and they didn't want to be caught holding the financial bag, so they bailed out. It's a bit like a panic sell-off in stocks, but in production. The governments and media that pushed the doom and gloom are responsible more than anything else.
