With the push toward edge computing the need for stronger central servers is becoming apparent. In a practical since this will enable better AI modeling for big factories or other highly monitored systems.
They will eventually be able to create 'digital twins' of these systems and be able to run more accurate simulations of change scenarios. With the end goal of creating digital twins of humans using all the data you willingly provide the internet for free. This will be especially useful in china where literally EVERYTHING is under surveillance.
Processing power is quite literally the next arms race. Whoever has the faster processing power will be more powerful in the age of AI driven cyber warfare.

It's actually energy efficiency. Energy isn't free, chip makers spend a lot of time improving energy efficiency. Big tech is the biggest energy consumer on the planet. One data center consumes as much energy as 100,000 homes.

All the heat these tech assholes generate could be stored in a molten salt heat battery and that could power turbines, reducing their energy footprint. But no, we need to pay more for gasoline for their convenience.
