This is kinda stupid. You can uninstall all the time wasting apps, or disable them. You can use Ting and not overpay for a phone/data plan. I have literally never been in a situation where my phone has run out of charge because I always have access to a charger, or have a backup battery. Even the potential privacy concerns aren't that relevant, because even if disable every single app and OS method of tracking, it can still be done based on the cell towers your phone connects to.
And I don't believe for a second that any trend is actually happening.
